About cycling & running in Bristol
Bristol Training Notes
Running: Locals run Bristol by linking short sharp city loops with proper green escapes. The Harbourside Loop gives a 5km circuit, with city lights reflecting off the water and smooth pavements and cobbled paths underfoot. Clifton Downs gives you the vast grassy expanse, the 5k loop, and speed work with views stretching the Avon valley. Ashton Court Parkrun brings the hill, the golf course at the top, and enough gradient for intervals. Alpha Run Club, Bristol Run Club, Southville Running Club, Vegan Runners Bristol, and Westbury Harriers keep the week busy. Wind in the Pillows Marathons & Half marathon, Fireworks 5km, Hanham Horror trail race, and Bitton 5k series sit as anchor races.
Cycling: Bristol has a diverse cycling scene, and locals use it for base miles, gravel, cyclocross, and the odd gran fondo mindset. Bristol Road Club runs a Saturday ride all year round, with two to four groups covering 90-160km at 26-33 km/h. CycleOut Bristol, Bristol South Cycling Club, Severn Road Club, Ride Bristol, and The Cheesy Riders give the scene real range. The Bristol to Bath railway path gives 13 miles for getting the legs spinning. The Bristol Green Belt 360 circles the city through the North 180 and South 180 loops. The North 180 finds gravel roads and bridleways. The South 180 gets hilly and technical around Dundry Hill, the Dundry singletrack descent, and Queen Charlton byway. Cheddar Gorge gives the big climbing day, and the Western Cyclocross League keeps racing sharp.
Season: Summer suits Bristol when the sun is out, and locals basically run into the setting sun for a while on the longer lines out toward Nailsea or Yatton. The Harbourside Loop stays quick for evening Z2, and Clifton Downs keeps its speed work feel without needing much planning. Ashton Court and Leigh Woods give runners and riders woodland, open parkland, roots, rocky sections, and muddy trails when the surface turns. Winter changes the kit choice more than the attitude. Vegan Runners Bristol move intervals from Eastville in summer to Queen Square in winter. Bristol Road Club still runs its Saturday club ride all year round.
