About cycling & running in Northampton
Northampton Training Notes
Running: Locals keep running simple in Northampton. Upton Park is a good loop, and Upton Park gives you a mostly flat 5km parkrun-style effort when you want intervals without fuss. Upton Country Park stays pretty flat too, so it works for easy Z2 and steady base miles. The canal near Upton takes you into town, and the River Nene brings you back with all tarmac paths and very few road crossings. Northampton Road Runners cover 5k to ultra running, road, trail and countryside. The Amazing Northampton Run, RunThrough Northampton 10k, 5k & Juniors 2026, and Blisworth 5 EMGP give the calendar proper anchors.
Cycling: Riders use the Norbital when they want Northampton without overthinking it. Norbital Route 539 runs 18 miles around the edges of town, mainly on dedicated cycle paths, and it is a good way of finding parts of town new to you. Brampton Valley Way carries NCN6 north on a well-surfaced railtrail for 16 miles to Market Harborough. Treads CC keeps road and off-road rides weekly, with 38-mile, 49-mile, 50-mile, 35-mile, and 56-mile routes in the mix. CTC Northampton, Easy Rider Cycle Club, Cyclone Mountain Bike Club, and Wakerley Wheelers add options. Northants Tri Club 10 brings the short hilly hit, and Hardingstone Sprint Triathlon brings the season-finale bike leg through local villages and Salcey Forest.
Season: The brief gives no fixed best months, so locals build the season around surfaces and events. Summer keeps the loops broad, with Upton Park, Upton Country Park, the Washlands, Pitsford Reservoir, and Brampton Valley Way all working for steady running. It hit 4°C on 10 May 2026, so kit choice still matters. Winter moves the focus towards repeatable tarmac, canal paths, river paths, Norbital laps, and club sessions. Runners keep the Z2 honest, and riders save the sharper work for the hilly Northants Tri Club 10 style efforts.
