Running: Point Mallard carries the local running feel, with park road and trail, paved trail, and enough room for easy Z2 laps. The loop is 10 km and gains 22 m. 5 miles. River City Runners gives the scene its club backbone. River City Pride 5K and Community Free Clinic Spirit of America 5 miler and Fun Run feel like anchor races.
Cycling: Locals ride Decatur for flat base miles along the banks of the Tennessee River. Team Rocket Tri Club gives the bike crowd a steady home, especially around Wet Dog Triathlon at Point Mallard. Wet Dog keeps the anchor-event feel with an open water swim, bike, and run on the flat river edge. The north side gives the closest bite, because the short hill overlooks the Tennessee River and drops steeply toward Rhodes Ferry Park. The west side adds a few minor ridges past S.R. 67. South and east stay flat enough for Z2, intervals, or tri setup work.
Season: Spring can be about perfect when the day lands slightly cool and breezy, though severe thunderstorms can change a plan fast. Summer temps hit 2°C or higher. Locals usually go early, keep bottles close, and save sharper intervals for the saner parts of the day. 4°C. Freezing temps still show up on 59 days a year, so runners and riders swap some pace pride for layers, lights, and steady base miles.
