MR Half Marathon

The MR Half Marathon is a Halloween half marathon starting at Morgantown Running on Beechurst Avenue in Morgantown, West Virginia. The race begins behind the Seneca Center on the rail trail, with parking available in the Seneca Center lot. A 1-mile kids race is also offered. This event is race #17 in the NCWV series, featuring a 4-hour time limit for the half marathon and a no-dogs policy on the course. The half marathon follows a straight, flat, fast 13.1-mile out-and-back course towards Point Marion and the Sheepskin Rail Trail. The initial nearly 3 miles are paved, transitioning to crushed limestone. The route offers shade and views of the Monongahela River. Aid stations are located at miles 2, 3, 5, 8, 10, and 11, with gels available on course. Awards are presented to the top three overall male and female finishers, as well as first-place finishers in each age group. The kids mile is also an out-and-back on the rail trail, directed towards the Core Arboretum.

Rattlerock Ultra

The Rattlerock Ultra series connects two mountain trail race weekends organized by Death to Tyrants Trail Running: Rattlerock at Coopers Rock and Tatonka, held in a valley known for its buffalo farms. Rattlerock features 50K and 25K races crossing wooded terrain above 2,000 feet elevation. Tatonka provides a January 50K and a 20-miler, with respective climbs of 4,500 and 2,500 feet. Rattlerock guides participants over wooden stream crossings, alongside rock cliffs reaching five stories high, and across rugged ground, with a chance of encountering a rattlesnake. Tatonka, whose name means “buffalo” in Lakota, starts from buffalo farms and ascends to a bird observatory tower. The course then follows undulating ridge trails through meadows, pine, deciduous trees, and rhododendron, concluding on a flat paved road. The series embraces trail-runner traditions, with volunteers offering encouragement, race directors providing warm greetings, and a drumbeat in the woods guiding runners towards the finish.

About cycling & running in Morgantown

Morgantown Training Notes

Running: Locals run the Mon River Rail-Trail System when they want steady Z2 without guessing at turns. South Park runners can point three directions on the rail trail and still get variety. Deckers Creek Trail gets beautiful once you get outside town. Botanical Gardens gives you a crushed gravel loop of about one mile. The rail trail system covers 75 miles and gives you quick dirt time. University High School gives you 3-4 grass miles on the cross country course. Morgantown Running meets every Monday on the rail trail behind the store at 5:30pm. Gene's Run, Run the Rock, Rattlerock Ultra, and Morgantown Marathon keep the calendar honest.

Cycling: Locals ride base miles on the Mon River Rail Trail and Deckers Creek Trail, then turn toward gravel when the legs are ready. Country Roads Cyclists has been active in north central West Virginia since 1979 and schedules rides every Saturday and Sunday from March 1 to October 31. The club anchors September with a Century Ride of 100 miles. The shorter loop covers 9 km and gains 1,205 m. The longer loop covers 3 km and gains 1,241 m. Coopers Rock, Preston County roads, Dorsey Knob, and Dents Run bring the climbing, with grades that can hit 10-20% or steeper.

Season: April through October is the clean window for riding, racing, and longer run blocks. Spring colors usually peak in late April, and fall foliage usually peaks in October. Summer brings heat and humidity, with July holding a daily mean temperature of 22.5°C and 13.2 days of +30°C highs each year. Randee Mile runs every Wednesday from June to August at 7:00pm, so locals use it for honest intervals. Shaded routes and higher elevations feel better when the valley is heavy. Winter cools the pace, with January averaging -0.1°C, annual snowfall averaging 60.5 cm, and rail-trail miles turning into steadier maintenance work.
