Rengsdorfer Volkswandertag
At Rengsdorf's outdoor pool, on the eastern edge of town, the Rengsdorfer Volkswandertag sends walkers and runners into the western Westerwald in Rhineland-Palatinate. The event includes the Westerwaldlauf and offers several distances, from shorter 5 km and 10 km runs to an 11 km hilly mixed-surface race, plus longer walking options including an official 25 km circular route and a 50 km distance. The 25 km route is rated medium, has good trail conditions, and is estimated at about seven and a half hours on foot. The long route heads south from Rengsdorf toward Oberbieber, follows the dam at the Oberbieberer Stausee, and passes above Heimbach Weis before entering the Weiser Wald along the Harmorgenberg slope. It then links forest paths, a stream section, and a return climb toward Rengsdorf, with official stations including Freibad Rengsdorf, Nonnenlei, and Wing. The course also passes burial mounds and Roman-era excavation sites, including remains connected with the Limes and a watchtower, so the day feels like a local countryside outing as much as a race.
