Newcastle's running scene is built around the River Tyne and coastal paths — flat riverside loops compete with the undulating trails at Rising Sun Country Park 10K Trail Run just south of the city. Cyclists face a steep learning curve: the city itself is hilly (Jesmond Dene and the Town Moor offer technical singletrack), but serious racers head to the smooth rolling roads of Sunderland and County Durham, where the Sunderland Clarion 25-miler and Vector Racing 25-miler draw competitive fields. The Northumberland and Durham coastline and moorland put genuine climbing within 30km in all directions.
