Flying Fox 10

The Flying Fox 10 is a 10-mile road race that begins and ends in Standon, a village in Staffordshire, finishing at All Saints School. Established in 2003, it is part of the North Staffs Road Runners Association programme and holds an England Athletics licence. The race is named after the organizing club’s fox logo, not the animal; however, a flying fox is a type of large bat. The course follows quiet country lanes through rolling terrain, offering an undulating profile distinct from a flat, urban race. Participants will run through Chapel Chorlton and Maer before heading back to Standon, where refreshments await at the finish. The event is popular enough to sell out, and its course records—50:15 for men and 1:00:04 for women—indicate it appeals to competitive club runners and local participants alike.

Shugborough Relays

Each runner at the Shugborough Relays completes two miles before passing to the next member of a four-person team. This is an evening 4 x 2 mile relay held at Staffordshire County Showground, starting at 7:30pm. Teams can enter as clubs, groups of friends, workplaces, families, shops, or other sports associations. The route incorporates tarmac drives, grass, firm woodland paths, and footpaths. It is a short course, but varied beyond a simple flat road race. The event limits entries to 400 teams and provides 12 team categories. All finishers receive medals, category winners get prizes, and there is even an award for the Best Team Name. The Shugborough name relates to the nearby estate and its railway tunnel, a 777-yard brick-lined passage constructed beneath the grounds to conceal the railway from Shugborough Hall.

Trentham Dave Clarke 5

The Trentham Dave Clarke 5 is an annual evening 5K held at Trentham Rugby Club on New Inn Lane in Trentham. It begins at 7:15pm and follows a multi-terrain route, meaning runners should anticipate more than a simple road race. Trentham Running Club organizes the event, providing practical facilities at Race HQ: chip timing, parking, toilets, showers, changing rooms, and access to the rugby club bar. The course combines paths, pavement, canal towpath, and grass fields, making shoe selection and pacing more engaging than on a flat, all-tarmac 5K. It is listed on the NSRRA calendar and is suitable for local club runners and anyone seeking a midweek race. The event minimizes waste through paper cups, no plastic water bottles, encouragement for refills, requests for car-sharing, bananas for all participants, and an optional medal instead of including one for every entrant.

Stoke Training Notes

Corrida: Locals run Stoke as six linked towns, with Hanley Park, Trentham Gardens, Westport Lake, and the Caldon Canal doing a lot of the weekly work. 30pm every Tuesday and Thursday, and Sunday mornings bring informal group runs from various locations. Westport Lake has an 8-mile loop path for easy Z2. The Potteries Greenway links Hanley Park and Ford Green Nature Reserve for steadier base miles. 5 miles. Potters ’Arf Marathon, Clayton 10K, Trentham Dave Clarke 5, Race for Life Stoke, and Pretty Muddy Stoke keep the calendar honest.

Ciclismo: Locals ride from Stoke into North Staffordshire and South Cheshire when the legs want proper miles. Lyme Racing Club covers Newcastle under Lyme, Stoke on Trent, North Staffordshire, and South Cheshire, with Saturday starter rides, Sunday road and mountain bike sections, and summer Thursday beginner road rides. Leek CC adds another local club name on the race sheet. The Potteries Greenway and the National Cycle Network handle steady spins. The Manifold Trail runs 8 miles on NCN549 from Waterhouses to Hulme End. The west side gets moderately hilly, and one Stoke route runs 63km with 2424 ft of ascent. Mow Cop carries the sharp stuff, especially the Mow Cop Killer Mile.

Temporada: July suits Stoke best when base miles, intervals, and longer rides all feel easier to stack. July temps stay 1°C or above, so locals usually get enough warm evenings for Trentham laps, canal runs, Thursday rides, and Friday coaching at Newcastle Velodrome from 6:30 pm. Winter changes the rhythm because an average year registers 41 air frosts. Runners keep Hanley Park, Westport Lake, and canal loops useful for steady work. Cyclists move more toward rollers and turbo training at St Mary's C of E School from September to April, while hardy road miles still happen when the surface behaves.
