Carrera Popular Ribera del Órbigo

The Carrera Popular Ribera del Orbigo is a local running race in Llamas de la Ribera, a municipality in Leon, Spain. It begins at 11:00 AM from the Calle Camping area, organized by the Llamas de la Ribera town council. The race is situated in the Ribera del Orbigo comarca, connecting it more to a small rural community than to a large-city road-racing circuit. The course details are limited, but the setting places runners in the Alto Orbigo area. Llamas de la Ribera covers the nearby villages of Quintanilla de Sollamas, San Roman de los Caballeros, and Villaviciosa de la Ribera. As a popular race, the participants likely consist of local runners, visitors from the province, and individuals seeking a community event rather than an elite-only competition. The town's main patron celebration, the Asuncion de Nuestra Senora in mid-August, occurs separately from the race but influences the local calendar around which village life is organized.

La Virginiana MTB

La Virginiana MTB is a mountain bike event held in Virgen del Camino, León, Spain. Taking place in June, it is categorized as BTT, the Spanish designation for off-road cycling. Participants can select from various route distances, featuring shorter loops of approximately 45-47 km and an extended 107 km option. The event structure includes non-competitive entries alongside timed classifications and published results. This approach offers mountain bikers an organized route with timing and distance options, accommodating those who prefer not to engage in every category as a direct competition.

About cycling & running in León

León Training Notes

Running: Locals run León like a compact mountain-adjacent base, with easy urban loops and hillier days when the legs ask for it. Trascandamia gives January runners the classic climb-and-drop hit through the hills of La Candamia. The León Half Marathon gives the calendar a 21 km anchor in mid-March. The city centre works for steady miles, while Barrio de La Lastra and parque nacional del Bosque de Gir keep things simple for weekday Z2. Club León is the club name to know. León’s San Silvestre closes the year on December 31.

Cycling: Riders get the best of León by choosing a direction before clipping in. The south and east stay relatively flat, so locals use them for base miles and cleaner tempo work. The north and west bring the climbs, with Pajares, Ventana, Vegarada, the Vegacervera Gorges, and the Picos de Europa pull. Zona Alfa León MTB brings technical trails, descents, banked curves, jumps, and rocky sections. Ribera del Órbigo Route follows the river for an easier spin. Club León sits in the local club mix. Power Race León - Larga 85k, La Virginiana MTB, and Lúpulo Bike give the bike calendar its anchors.

Season: Summer is the easiest season to sell here because León sits at over 800 m and runs cooler than most inland Spanish cities. Locals still run early or late, then leave the middle of the day for shade, lunch, or a soft spin. Cyclists use summer for longer Z2, Camino Frances miles, and bigger days toward the Cantabrian Mountain Passes. Winter changes the mood fast. León is cold in winter by Spanish standards, and the city averages around sixteen days of snow per year. Runners keep the city routes useful, while riders watch the passes and lean on flatter south and east roads.
