Würzburg's running and cycling scene orbits the Main River valley in Franconia, with rolling vineyard hills rising 100–150m above the city centre. Cyclists dominate here: the Spessartritt and Fünf Seen Rundfahrt are the region's signature long rides, threading through the Spessart forest and past crater lakes to the north and east. Runners find the terrain gentler within the city proper along the Main towpath, but serious trail work happens in the surrounding wine country where elevation gains come quick.
