Zurich's running scene centers on flat lakeside courses: the Neujahrsmarathon Zürich and Zürcher Silvesterlauf follow the Limmat river and Zürichsee shoreline, mostly at 406m elevation with minimal climbing. Cyclists dominate here—the Radrundfahrt Rund um de Zürisee is a 67km loop around the lake, while serious riders head into the Appenzell Alps (800m peaks, 30km northeast) or tackle the Toggenburg climbs south toward St. Gallen; the Tour de Suisse passes through the region each June with major Alpine stages nearby.
