Lugano

Lugano sits on the lake of the same name in the Ticino valley, surrounded by steep wooded hills that climb 500–800m from the shore. Runners favour the StraLugano half marathon, which traces the lakeside promenade and surrounding parkland, while cyclists tackle the Top Tour Granfondo San Gottardo—a 115km epic that crosses the San Gottardo pass at 2,106m elevation with sustained climbs through Alpine switchbacks. The terrain around the city is relentlessly hilly: flat running is confined to the waterfront, but hill repeats and trail work are unavoidable if you train locally.
