Innsbruck Alpine Trailrun Festival

The Innsbruck Alpine Trailrun Festival is a mountain trail-running weekend in Innsbruck, Austria, offering races from 7 km to 110 km. Typically held in early June, it provides a range of distances: a 15 km Rookie Trailrun, a 25 km trail half marathon, a 42 km trail marathon, and ultra options of 65 km, 85 km, and 110 km. Several races are UTMB Index qualifying events, attracting participants focused on mountain rankings as well as those seeking a personal challenge. The courses traverse mountain, forest, and natural terrain surrounding Innsbruck. The climbing increases significantly with distance: 373 m for the 7 km route, 1,020 m for the 25 km, 2,020 m for the marathon, and 5,380 m for the 110 km Masters of Innsbruck. The festival also features children’s and junior races, extending its appeal beyond ultra distances. A night race offers a distinct experience for those preferring a shorter run after dark, and the major ultras are named the Panorama Ultra Trail and Heart of the Alps Ultra.

IKB Baggersee Aquathlon Innsbruck

The IKB Baggersee Aquathlon Innsbruck takes place in late September at the Baggersee in Innsbruck, Tirol. This multisport race combines swimming and running, organized by the Tiroler Triathlon Club Innsbruck under the name IKB Aquathlon. The race is part of the EUREGIO Kinder Triathlon Zug, organized by the Tiroler Triathlon Verband. This connection highlights the event's focus on youth development, distinguishing it from a typical open race. The Baggersee also hosts a cross-triathlon, featuring swimming, mountain biking, and running, which has been included in the Austria Finals. The organizing club provides training in swimming, cycling, and running, underscoring the race's integration with Innsbruck's local triathlon community.

About cycling & running in Innsbruck

Innsbruck Training Notes

Running: You can run 8 km around town. The city centre feeds quickly into Hofgarten, Waltherpark, Rapoldipark, Baggersee Innsbruck, and the Sill-Inn-Schleife. The route to Hafelekarspitze is 2 km with 1,200 m gain. The route to Höttinger Alm is 7 km with 300 m gain, and Höttinger Hölle is simply steep. Eatly birds handles intervals and long runs, DNA trails goes trail running every Thursday, and Kasa sports club and Base five are worth knowing. Nordkette Vertical Run, Stadtlauf Innsbruck, Tiroler Firmenlauf, Innsbruckathlon - beat the city, and Innsbruck Alpine Trailrun Festival anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride the Innradweg when they want flat base miles, and that famous cycle route runs all the way to Kufstein. The city centre points riders straight at the climbs, with Nordkette and Hungerburg above town and Patscherkofel, Serles, and Brenner Pass to the south. Höttinger Höll gives you 12 km with 320 m gain, and the gradient hits up to 28 percent. The After Work circuit suits a hard spin with about 50 km and 700 m gain. Kühtai Rodeo brings the gran fondo legs, with 122 km and 4,250 m gain. GRAVEL INNSBRUCK is the anchor event, and the local mix also fits MTB, Gravelbike, cyclocross, and singletrack days.

Season: May to October is the clean window, and locals treat it as the main block for running trails, road climbs, gravel, and long Z2. Summer can flip fast, with cool rain one day and heat near 30°C the next. Nights usually stay cool, around 13°C on average, and they can dip to 7°C, so early starts still feel alpine. Winter changes the rhythm because cold, snowy weeks push road bikes off the passes and make the city more careful for running. The foehn wind can bring a thaw, and locals use those breaks for flatter Inn miles, short intervals, or a clear climb when the surface plays along.
