Capital City Race

The Capital City Race starts at the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City, Missouri, with 5K, 10K, and half marathon options for runners and walkers. It is a young annual event built around mental health awareness and the memory of Jared Palmer, who lost his life to mental illness. The routes are designed to show off Jefferson City’s major landmarks, and the half marathon is billed as the city’s first. The field is open to people moving at different paces, from walkers to runners, and each entry includes the usual race-day gear: a shirt, medal, bib, and swag bag for those who register early enough.

The Great Escape Triathlon

The Great Escape Triathlon is a race weekend in Jefferson City, Missouri, at Ellis Porter Riverside Park, suitable for families and beginners. The primary Great Escape events are for ages 13 and up, offering Super Sprint, Sprint, Sprint Relay, and Duathlon formats. The Mini Escape races are for children aged 5 to 12, with separate heats for younger and older age groups. The race begins with a swim in a four-lane, 50-meter pool. The cycling portion follows a route combining city and rural roads, heading towards the vicinity of the new Missouri State Prison before returning. The run leads participants toward the old Missouri State Penitentiary, with the finish line located at this historic site, providing a direct connection to the race's "Great Escape" name. All finishers get a medal and a participant shirt, while overall winners receive prizes and additional items.

About cycling & running in Jefferson City

Jefferson City Training Notes

Running: Locals run the Parks and Rec Greenway when they want steady miles without thinking too hard. The Greenway runs wide and concrete from Fairgrounds Road to Dunklin Street, and quarter-mile markers make intervals clean. The Greenway gives you a 1 mile concrete loop. Binder Park brings 12 miles of off-road trails when legs want dirt. The Jefferson City Roadrunners Club keeps the scene moving with races, training groups, newsletters, and a points series. Capital City Race, The Big Run JC, Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk, and the Thanksgiving Day Pie Run sit on the local calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride the Katy Trail for Z2, base miles, and long quiet days by farms and bluffs. The Katy Trail rolls east and west as a 225-mile crushed rock path, and biking on crushed rock can sometimes feel like running in sand. The route is 2 km and gains 121 m, so it works for a short spin. The route is 5 km with 329 m of ascent. The climbs live in the city hills, the bluffs, and that Missouri River bridge ramp where a cyclist can get dizzy biking in circles. Interlude 2026 starts at the Red Wheel bike shop.

Season: Spring and summer are the best months when locals want consistent running, riding, and race rhythm. Summer brings heat, rain, and common thunderstorms, so runners hit the Greenway early and cyclists keep Katy Trail miles flexible. The 4th of July Firecracker Mile, Kyle’s Summer Classic 5K Run/Walk, and The Great Escape Triathlon make summer feel busy in a good way. Winter turns colder, and light snow is common while about half of wintertime precipitation still falls as rain. Locals keep flat Greenway tempos, rubber track intervals, and short park loops in play when the dirt gets sloppy.
