About cycling & running in Caen
Caen Training Notes
Running: Locals use the Marina as the easy launch pad for steady runs. The route runs 6 km one-way on flat gravel. The Caen 'Runseeing' Tour runs 10k and gains 75m when it takes the hill up to Caen Castle. CAENRUNNERS keeps the group sharp with intervals, trail outings, blablaruns around 10 km, and a 5:45/km 10k entry pace. Marathon de la Liberté, Nordi'caen, Malherbe Urban Trail - Caen, and Les Foulées des Caenrunners give the calendar real anchor events.
Cycling: Riders keep it simple from Caen because the river and canal do the work. La Vélo Francette runs from Ouistreham to Caen for 16 km in about 1 hour and 2 minutes, with 0m of ascent and 0m of descent on smooth cycle path. The canal path covers 5 km from the Saint-Pierre basin in about 1 hour 30 minutes. The Véloroute coastal cycling path runs 250 km, so base miles are easy to stack. Vélo-club caennais gives the local club spine. Duathlon de Caen and the Tour de France stage 5 time trial give racers something to talk about. The climbs sit around Caen Castle more than the canal.
Season: June, July, August, and September are the best months for training in Caen. Summer stays cool by French standards, and average highs sit around 20°C, so Z2, intervals, and long rides do not feel cooked. Runners still get plenty from La prairie, les Odons, the Orne, and the canal when showers roll through. Riders keep using the greenways because the smooth paths hold a steady rhythm. Winter stays mild, and average lows sit around 3°C. Locals shift toward shorter runs, club sessions, canal spins, and steady base miles when daylight drops.
