I Got Your Six Walk/Run

The I Got Your Six Walk/Run takes place at Perry Farm Park in Kankakee County, Illinois. It includes a 10K run, a 5K run, and a 2-mile walk. Virtual 5K and 2-mile walk options are available for those unable to attend in person. The in-person route follows Perry Farm Park’s paved paths, passing through prairie and woods, with riverfront access. The event honors Officer Tyler Bailey and is organized in memory of Sgt. Marlene Rittmanic. All proceeds support local scholarships for fallen officers. Registered dogs participating in the 5K or walk receive a custom handkerchief, while human participants get a race shirt and medal.

Cobb Park Criterium

The Cobb Park Criterium is a bike racing series with events listed on BikeReg for online registration, not solely a race within a single park. The series focuses on criteriums, which are fast multi-lap races on short circuits, and also incorporates road racing. Riders from the South Chicago Wheelmen club are associated with the series; this club has been active since 1923. The series calendar has featured races and stops like the Sunny King Criterium, the Tour of St. Louis, Autobahn events, and Battle on the Border races, with connections to Alabama, Virginia, and Illinois. Participants compete in demanding races requiring significant effort. Some events provide live streams, and race photographers document the action. South Chicago Wheelmen riders also compete in events outside this series, such as the NY State Championships, linking the racing around Cobb Park to the broader amateur cycling community.

Kankakee Krono

Kankakee Krono is the Illinois State Individual Time Trial Championship, held in Aroma Park, Illinois, in late May. It is a USA Cycling-permitted road time trial organized by xXx Racing – Athletico, where riders race individually against the clock. The field includes Juniors, Masters, Para, Novice, and Elite riders, and the event separates TT bikes from road bikes so equipment differences are not combined. The course is a fast, flat 17 km loop. Juniors and Para athletes race one lap for 17 km, while other categories race two laps for 34 km. Medals are awarded to the top three in each category, and Illinois residents can compete for State Championship jerseys. USA Cycling rules apply, helmets are required, and the race proceeds regardless of weather.

About cycling & running in Kankakee

Kankakee River Base Miles

Running: Locals run the river first, because Kankakee is built around that line. KRRC has been the steady crew since 1979, and the club gets together for Tuesday and Thursday runs at 6:00 PM. Perry Farm Park gives runners five miles of paved trails for easy Z2 laps. Kankakee River State Park gives runners over 10 miles of trails when base miles need trees. Riverfront Park keeps a quick quarter-mile loop handy. KRRC puts on an 8-Hour or 4-Hour Race to keep race days on the calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride Riverfront Trailways when they want more than 10 miles along the Kankakee River without overthinking it. Kankakee River State Park Trail runs 11 miles on both sides of the river, and riders call it a beautiful ride all the way through. Kankakee River Bike Club anchors the bike scene with Two Rivers Century, which starts in Kankakee and follows the Kankakee River and the mouth of the Iroquois River. Cobb Park Criterium gives the town a proper crit. The Cobb Park Criterium course is 5 km and gains 265 m.

Season: Summer runs start with KRRC on Tuesdays and Thursday nights at 6:00 PM at the YMCA. August gives cyclists Two Rivers Century on the Sunday of the first full weekend, so locals stack base miles before then. Kankakee River State Park rides feel good when trees sit on both sides and the wind has near zero effect. Winter moves KRRC runs to Olivet at 6:00 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Winter also turns rides into shorter Z2 work, off-the-couch rebuilds, and steady trail time before crit legs and gran fondo miles come back.
