About cycling & running in ManchesterManchester-Nashua Training Notes
Running: Locals run the Piscataquog Trail from Merrimack River Park when they want steady base miles without fuss. The Goffstown Rail Trail keeps the gravel going west for 4 miles, and the Rockingham Rail Trail heads east of downtown. Derryfield Park has a 1 mile race course and a 5 mile race course, so intervals can get honest fast. Lake Massabesic has 50 miles of fire roads for trail running. Mine Falls Park and Horse Hill Nature Preserve keep Nashua in the mix. Millennium Running Club brings weekly workouts, and Greater Manchester Running Club adds track work, family runs, and winter runs. Manchester 2 Monadnock Ultramarathon is the big anchor.
Cycling: Locals ride a lot of city and back roads around Manchester, then slide onto gravel when Z2 needs less stopping. The route covers 44 km and gains 66 m. The 5 mile loop from Workout Club climbs 91 m, and Manchester, NH - North End gains 78 m, so the punchier work sits close to town. 9 mi. Goodale's in Nashua has Monday and Thursday rides at 6 pm. New England Six Pack 1200k, 1000k, and 200k are the endurance anchors.
Season: Spring, summer, and fall keep the routine simple, with Millennium Running Club workouts on Tuesday evenings at 6pm around greater Manchester. Monthly pub runs from May through September make summer feel social after tempo runs, progression runs, and fartleks. Locals use Lake Massabesic, the Merrimack River paths, Dorrs Pond, and the rail trails when daylight is long. Winters in Manchester can be cold and snowy, so runners shift toward mid-week winter runs and Thursday 6:00 PM workouts at the Hampshire Hills Dome. Cyclists keep outdoor miles when conditions allow, then stack indoor winter workouts and save the longer gran fondo legs for the warmer stretch.
