Queen City Crown

The Queen City Crown is a two-half-marathon series in Helena, Montana. To complete the series, runners must run both the Governor's Cup Half Marathon and the Just for the Helena of It Half Marathon within the same calendar year. Participation in the series is free, though each individual race requires its own registration and fee. Finisher times are combined from the two races to determine series results, with prize money awarded to the top three male and female participants. First place receives $100, and second and third place each receive $50. Following the Just for the Helena of It race, all Queen City Crown finishers are included in a random drawing for non-cash prizes. This structure offers incentives for both elite runners and regular participants.

Montana Women's Triathlon

The Montana Women's Triathlon begins at the Memorial Park city pool in Helena. The race features a 500-meter swim in a 50-meter outdoor pool, consisting of 10 lengths. This is followed by a flat 10-mile bike ride and a 3-mile run or walk. The event is designed as an accessible multisport race for women, offering the option for participants to form three-generation teams. The bike course utilizes a combination of paved city trails, packed dirt, and short gravel sections, with mechanical assistance available. The run or walk route is primarily within Centennial Park. The event's focus is on women supporting women through sport, with proceeds benefiting local organizations like Girls Thrive, Running for Montana's Future/The Angel Fund, the Helena Cyclones Interscholastic Mountain Bike Team, the Helena Lions Swim Team, and contributions to a community pool project in Helena. Volunteers manage race-day tasks, including lap counting, bike course monitoring, and run course direction.

HELENA OUTDOOR TRIATHLON (HOTri)

The Helena Outdoor Triathlon, or HOTri, takes place at Spring Meadow Lake State Park in Helena, Montana, situated between Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. It offers multiple race formats beyond a single triathlon: participants can choose the triathlon, sprint aqua-bike, sprint duathlon, a super sprint for beginners, or a 5K Fun Run. Most distances have a virtual participation option, including medals for those who complete it remotely. The swim occurs in a spring-fed, man-made lake. The bike course utilizes recently repaved two-lane roads, with sheriffs present for safety. The run is a flat, fast trail, suitable for new racers and challenging for experienced ones. Finishers receive practical, local items: triathlon, duathlon, and aqua-bike participants get a shirt, a post-race meal, and age-group awards up to third place. All 5K finishers receive a medal. The Fun Run serves as a fundraiser, with net proceeds benefiting local charities such as Prickly Pear Land Trust, Queen City Wheel House, and Helena Food Share.

Helena Training Notes

Hardlopen: Mount Helena City Park is the easy call for trail miles, with the 1906 trail, Diretissima Trail, Ridge Trail, and Powerline Trail all right above town. Locals use the South Hills trails from Tubbs Trailhead or Mt. Helena City Park Trailhead when they want singletrack, hill repeats, and a little quiet time. Helena Vigilante Runners keeps the group work honest with Tuesday-at-Noon Interval Workouts and Thursday-at-5:45 pm Trail Runs. The Governor's Cup, Don’t Fence Me in Trail Run, Queen City Crown, Just for the Helena of It, and The Augúst give the calendar real anchors.

Fietsen: Helena Bicycle Club rides for fun, exercise, fellowship, and sometimes food, with Tuesday and Thursday evening club rides from May through September. One route starts 2 miles from downtown and climbs around the base of Mount Helena. Another route starts 1 mile from downtown, heads north on Green Meadow Drive to Lincoln Road, and includes Lake Helena. Gravel riders hit Tenmile Creek Park first, then venture toward Grizzly Gulch, Priest Pass, and Rimini Road. York 38 Special and York Burger Boogie are the anchor events.

Seizoen: Spring and fall are the best months because the trails feel fast, the air stays easier, and Z2 does not feel like a chore. Summer brings hot and dry days, so locals run early, ride early, and save hard intervals for shade or shorter windows. Mount Helena trails and the South Hills still deliver, but hydration starts to matter on every climb. The mountain bike trails are usually the first to open and the last to close. Most roads stay bikeable 10 months of the year. Winter brings long, cold, moderately snowy spells, and chinooks can still open good windows for both running and riding.
