About cycling & running in Niterói

Niterói Training Notes

Running: Niterói runners keep the easy stuff on the bay. Locals follow the path along the water from Praia de Gragoata to Praia de Icaraí, and that line runs 4.2 km one-way with great views of the water, beach, contemporary buildings, and Rio across the way. Praia de Icaraí gives you 1.5 km of runnable beach when the legs want softer Z2. Estrada Leopoldo Fróes continues 2 km south to Praia de São Francisco, and the next section goes about 3 km to Praia de Charitas/da Areia Grossa. Canto do Rio Foot-Ball Club sits in the local sporting memory. Maratona do Rio and Meia Maratona da Reserva anchor the race talk.

Cycling: Niterói riders use the coast first. Orla de Icaraí gives four kilometers of protected lanes, and locals spin it for base miles before pushing toward Itacoatiara Beach or Parque da Cidade. Bikemap lists 720 cycle routes around Niterói, and one bigger day covers 71.7 km with 776 m ascent, so the city can feed a gran fondo build without leaving the bay rhythm. The climbs sit in the Malheiro mountains, Calaboca mountains, and Tiririca mountains, where Stone of the Elephant rises to 412 m. Canto do Rio Foot-Ball Club, Niteroiense Futebol Clube, Fonseca Atlético Clube, Rio Cricket and Athletic Association, and Paissandu Atlético Clube carry the club names here. IRONMAN 70.3 Rio de Janeiro is the anchor event.

Season: March and July are the months when most people get on bikes here. Summer keeps things warm to hot, and frequent rainfall means runners and riders plan intervals early, keep kit simple, and treat the waterfront as the reliable line. Winter stays warm to hot too, so the change is more about rhythm than survival. Locals keep Z2 steady on Orla de Icaraí, use Praia de Icaraí when the run needs softer ground, and save the hillier interior for strength days. The city centre stays useful because the ferry from Praça XV to Praça Arariboia takes 20 minutes and runs every 20 minutes.
