1. Neckarsteiglauf 50km

The Neckarsteiglauf 50km is a trail ultramarathon beginning in Heidelberg, Germany, with 40 places. It covers the first 50 km of the Neckarsteig, a hiking route of approximately 126 km stretching from Heidelberg towards Bad Wimpfen. Entry is free, but it is not a casual run: the course ascends about 2,000 meters and features many trail sections, some steep and technical. This is a low-key, mountain-style event rather than a large city race, reflected in its field size. In a recent edition, only eight runners completed the course, with six men and two women in the results. The men’s winning time was just over six hours, and the women’s winning time was a little over eight hours, indicating how the terrain influences the race. The Deutsche Ultramarathon-Vereinigung e.V. organizes the event, with Gernot Wurst as the organizer.

9. Heidelberger Panoramatour

The Heidelberger Panoramatour begins and ends at the ISSW sports campus in Im Neuenheimer Feld, Heidelberg. Riders depart in the morning between 07:00 and 10:00. This is an RTF, a German non-racing road cycling tour organized by RSV Heidelberg e.V. It is open to everyday riders, licensed Breitensport cyclists, club riders, and those without a club. The event takes place in May and offers four distances: approximately 55 km, 92 km, 145 km, and 178 km, suitable for a first longer ride or a challenging day. The routes go into the Odenwald, with climbing increasing with distance. The short route has around 520 metres of ascent, while the longest reaches about 3,010 metres. The 55 km option is rolling, but the longer routes are distinctly hilly. Only the shortest tour is signposted; the others are navigated by GPS track. Control and food points are located at Hirschhorn, Olfen, and Heiligkreuzsteinach. It is also conducted as a Sternfahrt, or star ride. The event maintains a club-atmosphere with team classification lists at the start and awards for the largest team, the youngest rider, and the oldest rider.

Trail Marathon Heidelberg

Trail Marathon Heidelberg begins and ends near Karlsplatz in Heidelberg’s old town, then directs runners from the city into steep forest trails above the Neckar. This mid-September trail running event in Germany offers several distances: a 6 km run, the 20 km Base-Trail, the 30 km Half Trail, marathon-distance races of approximately 42 km and 45 km, and a 50 km ultra. The event holds UTMB Index status and iTRA points, attracting runners focused on mountain and ultra-trail rankings, as well as those seeking a local trail challenge. The longer courses are single-loop routes with significant elevation gain: around 900 meters on the 20 km, 1,340 meters on the 30 km, 1,800 meters on the 42 km, and 2,200 meters on the 50 km. The 42 km route primarily follows uneven forest paths and trails, ascends three peaks, and features the Himmelsleiter after about 35 km: an 850-step sandstone staircase leading to the Königstuhl. Along the course, runners pass Heidelberg landmarks and gain wide views over the city and the Rhine-Neckar Delta, but the key characteristic is that this is a demanding hill race, not a road marathon with incidental woodland.

About cycling & running in Heidelberg

Heidelberg Training Notes

Running: Heidelberg runners use the Neckar River, Philosophenweg, Heiligenberg, Königstuhl, Gaisberg, and Weißer Stein when they want real trail legs. Locals start easy in the old town or city centre, then climb fast when intervals turn into hill work. The route covers 22 km and gains 54 m, so it works for steadier base miles. Runners look to Heidelberger TV, TSG Rohrbach, SV Nikar Heidelberg, and Deutscher Alpenverein Sektion Heidelberg. Trailmarathon Heidelberg, Reischmann Bahnstadtlauf Heidelberg, NCT-LAUFend gegen Krebs, and 1. Neckarsteiglauf 50km anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Heidelberg riders get around quickly by bicycle, and the city backs that up with 260 km of cycle paths. Locals spin the Electoral Palatinate Axis route, the Electoral Palatinate route, and the Bergstraße cycle route when Z2 needs more scenery. RSV Heidelberg e. V. is the name to know for proper road energy. The 9. Heidelberger Panoramatour brings steep climbs, wide views, and real Radsport feeling. Königstuhl sits south of town at 568 m, Heiligenberg rises north at 445 m, and Gaisberg gives another punchy option at 375 m. The Oden Forest and Little Oden Forest hold the climbing legs; the Upper Rhine Plain holds the faster miles.

Season: Spring starts working from mid February onwards, and locals use it for base miles before the bigger race blocks. Summer runs from June to September, and day temperatures around 30 °C make early starts feel normal. Heat waves can push Heidelberg to 40 °C, so runners and riders keep intervals short, water close, and long Z2 away from the hottest part of the day. Single thunderstorms usually mark the break in stable summer weather. Winter stays mostly mild, but light nighttime frosts happen in the coldest months. Rain becomes the normal texture then, and cyclocross, wet trail runs, and steady endurance rides replace the sharp stuff.
