Cartagena is a coastal Mediterranean city where running and cycling both benefit from flat seafront routes and proximity to inland mountain terrain. Runners use the paseo marítimo along the harbour for easy kilometers, while the broader cycling scene tilts toward the nearby Murcia region's established events like the Marcha MTB Bahía de Mazarrón and 3ª Bike Maraton Ruta 062, both serious mountain-bike marathons in the limestone hills 30–40km inland. The city itself sits at sea level; real climbing starts in the Sierra de la Cresta del Gallo and surrounding uplands where these regional races are based.
