The Jackalope Lope
The Jackalope Lope uses the steep trails of Whiskeytown National Recreation Area in northern California, starting from Brandy Creek Beach. This annual trail running series offers three distances: 8.5 miles, 20.5 miles, and 52k, accommodating both those seeking a shorter challenge and participants prepared for extended climbs around Whiskeytown. The courses traverse Whiskeytown’s more challenging trails, with organizers assuring clear markings and aid stations. The race embraces its unique name; lore suggests the distances were measured by Earl, a 72-year-old miner, during a burro ride with Billy Jack. A National Park Pass is required. Packet pickup is available in Redding and on race morning. The event concludes with lunch and refreshments at the base area. Proceeds support the maintenance of the local trail system, directly benefiting the paths used in the race.
