Redding sits on the Sacramento River in the northern Sacramento Valley where heat and sparse trees define the running and cycling environment. The Jackalope Lope is a 52km trail race that climbs into the surrounding foothills; runners also use the paved Sacramento River Trail for flat out-and-back miles. Cyclists tackle the LaGrange Classic Mountain Bike Race in the nearby Cascade foothills, with technical singletrack and 1,000m+ elevation gain, while road cyclists use Highway 299 west toward the Trinity Alps for serious climbing.
