The Great World Peace 5K

The Great World Peace 5K begins and ends at Hayford Park on 13th Street in Bangor, Maine. This 5K road race begins at 8:00 AM EDT, costs $30 to register, and has a straightforward goal: to promote good health while focusing on world peace. The course consists of a flat, fast double loop through Bangor streets, including 13th, Hammond, Dean, 14th, Frances, Manners, and Union. Mile markers and directional arrows are painted on the pavement, making the route simple to navigate. Maine Endurance Sports Alliance organizes the race as part of its broader efforts to support marathons, half marathons, 10Ks, and 5Ks in Maine communities like Bangor, Augusta, Waterville, and Lincoln. Volunteers and sponsors contribute to MESA races, with RunSignup managing official registration and race communications.

5K for heating oil supporting the Maine Veterans Project

The 5K for Heating Oil is an annual 5K fundraiser in Brewer, Maine, held at 100 Washington Street in October. The race begins at 10:00 AM EDT and concludes around 11:30 AM EDT. This event uses a straightforward local road race format to address the winter heating oil needs of Maine veterans. Triumph Professional Cleaning Services organizes the race. Owner Ben Dunkle sought a way to support local veterans and collaborated with Doc Goodwin of the Maine Veterans Project. Proceeds benefit the Maine Veterans Project's heating oil program, assisting veterans with fuel costs before winter. The event aims to raise $5,000, which would supply heating oil for 50 veterans.

About cycling & running in Bangor

Bangor Training Notes

Running: Locals run Bangor Waterfront Park when they want river miles and an easy meetup point. Hayford Park works for sharper days, especially when The Great World Peace 5K puts a flat, fast double loop on the calendar. Bangor City Forest gives the park-heavy feel when base miles need softer edges. The route covers 93 km and climbs 269 m, so it fits steady Z2 or longer intervals. The route covers 69 km and 1 m of gain. Bangor Marathon, Wellspring's 11th Annual 5K Race for Recovery, and St. Joseph Hospital's Commit to Community anchor the year.

Cycling: Locals ride out of Bangor when they want quiet roads, river edges, and enough climbing to keep the legs honest. Slipping Gears Cycling runs Tuesday MTB at Bangor City Forest from the Kittredge Road entrance at 6:00pm. SGC Thursday Road Ride rolls by 5:30 pm, and SGC Saturday Morning Road Ride leaves from the shop at 8am. The route covers 4 km and climbs 838 m, with terrific climbs and awesome descents. The gravel route runs 8 km with 545 m of climbing. The third gravel route runs 8 km with 163 m near the Penobscot River.

Season: May through September gives Bangor its best training block for both sports. Temps hover around 5°C, so locals stack early runs, evening spins, Z2, and the odd gran fondo-style day before the heat settles in. Summer roads feel made for base miles, and Bangor City Forest keeps singletrack and cyclocross legs in play. Winter changes the math fast. Winter temps drop to 3°C, and the city sees 185 cm of average annual snowfall. Snow depth reaches at least 25 cm on 66 days in an average winter, so runners chase firm footing and cyclists shift toward shorter rides or winter-friendly trails.
