About cycling & running in LawtonLawton Training Notes
Running: Lawton runners keep the week simple and useful. Elmer Thomas Park gives locals the easiest in-town place for steady laps, shakeouts, and a little Z2 before work. East Cache Creek adds a natural edge when a run needs more space and less fuss. WarCat Fun Run and Stampede The Trail 5K 2026 give the local calendar its short-race rhythm. The Dehydrator 2026, Memorial Day 5k Fun Run/walk, Rush Springs Watermelon Festival Watermelon 5k/10k, and Monumental 5K and Veterans Honor Walk give runners enough anchor events to stay honest.
Cycling: Lawton riders have more choices than outsiders expect. The Lawton Chapter rides weekly on Saturdays in the Spring, with beginner rides around 8 miles, intermediate rides around 14 miles, and advanced rides around 22 miles. The beginner loop is 2 km and gains 40 m, so it works for quick spins. The intermediate loop is 8 km and gains 311 m. The Wichita Mountains, Mount Scott, Mount Pinchot, and Killer Hill hold the real climbing. Tour of the Wichita's and Tour de Meers feel like the big ride targets.
Season: August and September bring the best riding rhythm in Lawton, and locals use those months for base miles, gran fondo prep, and long Z2. Summer keeps runners and cyclists honest because Lawton stays hot and dry, averages 21 days at 100°F and above, and throws strong south or south-southeast winds across the plains. June heat makes The Dehydrator 2026 and Tour of the Wichita's feel earned. Winter stays mild enough for both sports, but northerly winds can sharpen the cold, and Lawton averages eight days that never rise above freezing.
