Coimbra's running terrain is rolling and forested—the Mondego river cuts through the city's steep medieval core, but most serious running happens in the pine-covered hills inland toward Lousã, roughly 300m elevation gain over 15–20km routes. The cycling scene thrives on gravel and road routes through the Bairrada wine region south and east; the Ansião Gravel Race Challenge and Rota Pedalar & Paladar use the network of quiet roads and forest tracks that make central Portugal distinctive for mixed-surface riding. Winter rainfall can turn routes muddy, but spring and autumn bring perfect conditions for the longer gravel epics like the Bairrada Ultra Marathon 2026.
