Modena

Modena is dead flat on the Po Valley floor, making it a cyclist's launch pad for the Apennines 30km south. The Granfondo del Cimone and PanSec draw serious gravel and road riders into the mountains; runners stick to the canal towpaths and the local 30° Modena di Corsa con l'Accademia Militare 10km circuit through the city centre. The real climbing starts around 800m elevation in the ridges above, but Modena itself is fast, pancake terrain ideal for tempo work and flat 5K races like the 5Mila del Novisad.
