Bologna's running scene centres on the hills south of the city: the Casaglia-San Luca climb is a 10km benchmark race, gaining roughly 200m over steep cobbled streets toward the Sanctuary of San Luca with its 666 arches. Cyclists have immediate access to the Apennines—the Granfondo del Cimone (121km) and Sassorace (45km) both tackle serious mountain terrain within an hour's ride, with the Cimone reaching 2164m and delivering sustained alpine climbing from the Po Valley floor.
