About cycling & running in HammHamm Training Notes
Running: Locals run Hamm by stitching parks, canal paths, and district loops together. The city has a 195 km marathon route through all city districts. The Uentrop district keeps the half-marathon route along the Datteln-Hamm Canal simple and useful for Z2. Lippepark, Maxipark, Kurpark, and the former Radbod colliery give runners easy landmarks. The Tuesday running group meets at 6:00 PM, with Reha Bad Hamm from April to October and Maxipark from November to March. LG Hamm, TEAM HSC, and Westfälischer Turnerbund e. sit in the local club mix. The Sparkassen Winterlaufserie, Hammer Frauenlauf, MAXiLauf, AOK-Firmenlauf Hamm, Adventslauf, and Uentroper Geithelauf are the anchor dates.
Cycling: Locals ride Hamm like a flat base-mile town with useful dirt edges. The Lippedamm carries the small bike tour between the Datteln-Hamm Canal and the Lippe river. White bridges take riders over the Radbod dump toward the Radbod Mine plant. The former coal railway points east, and the Lippeauen can turn a tidy spin into gravel that gets muddy and slippery. Bikemap lists 2,602 cycle routes around Hamm. One route runs 5 km with 0 m ascent and 0 m descent. Another route runs 7 km with 107 m ascent and 116 m descent. 7 km. TEAM HSC, LG Hamm, and Westfälischer Turnerbund e. are the club names locals know.
Season: May and August are the months when most people get on their bikes here. Summer keeps the riding open for Z2, gran fondo legs, and steady road work toward Möhnesee routes. Runners get long daylight on the canal, Lippe Auen, and the dike, with the old line in your head: running like on the North Sea, just without the North Sea. Winter moves the Tuesday group to the main entrance of Maxipark from November to March. Herringen, Maxipark, and the former Radbod colliery keep illuminated Winterlaufstrecken ready. Cyclists swap fast crit legs for steadier base miles when paths turn wet, gravelly, and slick.
