Almería's running and cycling scene is shaped by desert and coast: the city sits on Spain's driest Mediterranean shore with the Sierra de Gádor rising inland and the Almería Desert beginning just 30km north. Cyclists tackle the notorious Skoda Titan Desert 101km event across that barren terrain, or the Edición Dual Las Tres Calas 103km which mixes coastal climbs with inland sections; both demand heat acclimatization and serious endurance. Local runners stick to flat seafront routes and the Carrera Pescadería Virgen del Carmen 5km race along the fishing quarter, but serious elevation work means heading into the sierras west of the city where sustained climbs exceed 1000m.
