Gravel Day in Essen

Gravel Day in Essen is a gravel bike race integrated into Rad am Ring at the Nürburgring, with its start and finish located within the Formula 1 arena. Participants begin from the Grand Prix circuit's start-and-finish straight on Saturday midday, coinciding with the Grand Départ. Both men and women have the option of 50 km, 100 km, or 125 km distances, with categories for both licensed and unlicensed riders. Now in its second edition, the race also holds German Championship status, though international licensed riders may participate without entering the championship competition. The route incorporates circuits on and alongside the Nordschleife, the Nürburgring's "Green Hell," without utilizing or crossing public roads. The initial kilometres trace the Grand Prix circuit before the course transitions onto the Nordschleife via Hatzenbach, descends towards Breidscheid, and then directs riders back to the asphalt through a narrow opening in the safety barrier. The most challenging named section is the ascent towards Hohe Acht, a 300-meter gain over 5.5 kilometres, followed by undulating kilometres on trails, forest paths, and Nordschleife segments. The lap concludes via Döttinger Höhe and the Hohenrain chicane. The 50 km event consists of two laps, while the primary races extend to 100 km for women and 125 km for men. Over 500 participants are anticipated, and former German champion Paul Voß contributed to the course design.

About cycling & running in Mülheim an der Ruhr

Mülheim Training Notes

Running: Locals run the Ruhr first, because the city gives you both banks and green space without fuss. The route gives you 5 km of flat running from Müga Park south to Ruhrstrand park in Saarn. Müga Park feels like the easy start, and the Gerbersteg keeps the river rhythm steady. The Radschnellweg RS1 between Mülheim and Essen works well for darker intervals when you bring a headlamp. Ruhrauenlauf Mühlheim is the local anchor. Styrumer Straßenlauf Rund um die Neustadtstraße and 2. Luftschifflauf keep the calendar honest.

Cycling: RTC Mülheim an der Ruhr e.V. gives road riders the steady club base, with group training rides matched by legs and pace. Rad Club Sturmvogel 1898 e.V. Mülheim an der Ruhr brings the event side, especially the 72nd Volksradfahren. The Volksradfahren starts and finishes at the MÜGA-Wiese am Schloss Broich, and its 25 km and 44 km routes both roll over the Rheinische Bahn-Trasse. RTC Mülheim runs the Ruhrtal-RTF with 40 km, 75 km, and 110 km variants, so the 110 km day is the gran fondo mood. Mülheimer RadHügel at Sportanlage Hügelstr. gives the skills work.

Season: Summer is the best block for trekking bike tours here, and RTC Mülheim organizes those rides every two weeks. The city gives more than 50 percent green and forest space, so Z2 base miles feel easy to place around the Ruhr, Saarn-Mendener Ruhraue, Hexbachtal, and the smaller valleys. Locals use warm evenings for river runs, Rheinische Bahn-Trasse spins, and airport time-trial efforts at Essen/Mülheim. Winter changes the kit and the discipline, because RTC mountain bikers stay busy with CTF tours and the Winterbiketrophy while runners keep the flat river paths for steady work.
