Runners find the valley floor mostly flat around downtown and the James Madison University campus, though the Seven Bends Aqua Blaze duathlon offers a tougher test mixing running with water crossings. Cyclists have excellent road options: the Lee Warren Queen City Century rolls through the rural piedmont for 161km, and the valley's proximity to the Blue Ridge means sustained climbs and long descents are within 30–50km rides.
